Problem Statement

How might we help teen lifters progress in the gym while staying mentally balanced?

This project stemmed from my own journey with lifting, where I recognized the importance of balancing mental well-being alongside physical progress. But was this need universally recognized?

User Surveys

Exploring Teen Lifters’ Needs

I conducted ~300 user surveys among teen lifters throughout my high school as a sample to understand their experiences and challenges they face trying to stay fit and stay on top of their school work.

Some sample questions were

  • How often do you feel challenged by balancing school, social life, and training?

  • Do you feel that your mental state affects your physical performance in the gym?

  • What are your main motivations for lifting and training?

  • What challenges do you encounter in your fitness journey?

The survey results revealed that most teen lifters experience challenges balancing their fitness journey with other commitments, with 70% reporting that their mental state impacts their physical performance in some way. Additionally, 65% expressed interest in an app that combines workout tracking with mental well-being features, and rated the usefulness of mental health tracking alongside physical performance at an average of 7.8 out of 10. These findings highlight a clear need for Clarity: a platform that supports both the physical and mental aspects of fitness, helping young lifters stay balanced and motivated in their journey.

Teen lifters are increasingly interested in developing both physical and mental resilience as they progress in their fitness journey. In our surveys, a significant portion of respondents expressed the desire for a platform that not only tracks workouts but also provides mental well-being support, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to fitness that helps them stay motivated and balanced in their routines.

Value mental health alongside physical progress
Our data reveals that over 65% of teen lifters find it challenging to stay consistent with workouts due to stress from school and social obligations. They prefer tools that allow them to log their moods and track mental well-being in addition to physical progress, indicating that teen lifters see mental health as integral to their overall fitness journey and seek features that support both aspects.

A need for resources that promote mental and physical harmony
Many teen lifters struggle to balance their fitness goals with daily life pressures. They expressed a desire for features that provide both physical training programs and resources to manage stress, build confidence, and stay motivated. Some even mentioned that having access to a supportive community of like-minded lifters would help them stay on track, highlighting the importance of a cohesive fitness platform that fosters both individual progress and community support.

The gap between tracking physical gains and nurturing mental well-being often leads to frustration, as teen lifters find themselves overwhelmed without tools that integrate both areas. While young athletes appreciate resources that help them train, they value platforms that combine mood tracking, goal-setting, and supportive features to encourage balanced growth in a single, user-friendly ecosystem.

The Solution

Integrated Mobile

A mobile app was selected as the ideal platform because it enables consistent, on-the-go access for teen lifters, fitting seamlessly into their daily lives. The app allows for real-time updates, daily mood tracking, and tailored workout programs, giving users a personalized experience that evolves with their progress and helps them stay committed to both their physical and mental health goals.

Teen lifters, especially those at the beginner-to-intermediate level, often find it challenging to navigate the intertwining journey of physical and mental well-being. While they aspire to progress in their weightlifting journey, there is a lack of holistic platforms that cater to both their mental and physical needs. They need a tool that not only provides them with tailored workout plans but also emphasizes the importance of mental health, allowing them to track their moods alongside their fitness achievements.
